Wayne Rooney, the former English and Manchester United striker, is reportedly considering a shift towards boxing. According to ESPN, the 38-year-old has engaged in discussions with a boxing promoter to participate in a Misfits Boxing event. Rooney recently parted ways with his managerial position at Birmingham City, a Championship side. Alongside his playing career, he has gained experience coaching in the second-tier of English football and the MLS.
Misfits Boxing, established by YouTuber KSI in 2022, is a unique boxing promotion that transcends traditional boundaries. While primarily showcasing online creators, the organization has also provided opportunities for retired athletes. Notably, former NFL running back Le’Veon Bell achieved his first official boxing triumph on a Misfits card in April 2023. Additionally, former MMA fighter Chris Avila also competed on the same card.
It is important to note that Misfits Boxing operates independently from the regulations set by the British Boxing Board of Control. Consequently, any fight involving Rooney under their banner would not be recognized as a professional bout.
Rooney would join a distinguished list of athletes who have transitioned to boxing later in their careers. Following in the footsteps of former Premier League player Curtis Woodhouse, who went on to secure the British light welterweight title, Rooney aims to make a similar leap. Another notable example is Katie Taylor, one of the most accomplished female lightweight boxers, who successfully shifted from Gaelic football to pursue boxing full-time. Furthermore, former Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Ed “Too Tall” Jones maintained an unblemished 6-0 record as a heavyweight in the ring. Likewise, former Houston Oilers running back Alonzo Highsmith retired from football in 1992 and enjoyed a three-year boxing career, accumulating an impressive record of 27-1-2.
