In the latest development, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) faced a financial setback while attempting to acquire the services of leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal during the auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL). Despite successfully securing the purchase of pacer Harshal Patel for a hefty sum of Rs 10.5 crore, the franchise refrained from engaging in a bidding war for Chahal’s talents.
Ultimately, it was the Rajasthan Royals (RR) who emerged victorious in the pursuit of Chahal, acquiring him for a substantial amount of INR 6.5 crore. This acquisition came after an intense bidding war involving the Mumbai Indians (MI), RR, and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
During a recent appearance on the Beer Biceps podcast, Chahal expressed his disappointment at being released by the RCB after representing the team in 114 matches. However, former RCB director Mike Hesson sympathized with Chahal, acknowledging his right to feel upset.
Hesson attributed the issue to the auction process, explaining that while RCB had intentions of securing both Patel and Chahal, the latter’s absence from the marquee players’ list prevented the franchise from acquiring him. Consequently, when Chahal’s name was announced in Set Six, RCB found themselves lacking the necessary funds to secure his services.
Currently, Chahal finds himself playing for RR, and in the inaugural season of IPL 2022 with his new team, he emerged as the leading wicket-taker. Over the course of 17 matches, Chahal managed to claim an impressive total of 27 wickets, significantly contributing to his team’s journey to the final of the high-profile league.
It is worth noting that Chahal initially started his IPL career with the Mumbai Indians squad but later joined RCB in 2014. Overall, Chahal has accumulated a total of 145 appearances in the tournament, amassing 187 wickets with an economy rate of 7.67. Additionally, he has achieved four four-wicket hauls and one five-wicket haul throughout his career.
