French tennis player Maxence Broville, who achieved a career-high ranking of No. 708 in the WTA ranking in 2023, has been prohibited from participating in tennis for a period of 7 years due to allegations of match-fixing. This ban was imposed as a result of Broville’s failure to cooperate with an investigation conducted by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).
In addition to the suspension, Broville has been fined $5,000. The match-fixing charges against him relate to incidents that occurred in 2017 and 2018. Broville was found to have violated points F.2.b and F.2.d of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP), which pertain to non-compliance with ITIA investigations, including the refusal to submit personal devices for testing as requested in writing by ITIA investigators.
Despite denying the allegations, Broville was handed a 7-year suspension during a hearing on January 5, 2024, presided over by the independent Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer (AHO) Charles Hollander.
Since June 20, 2023, Broville has been under provisional suspension, and his disqualification will remain in effect until June 19, 2030. Throughout this period, he is prohibited from participating in any tennis events sanctioned by the ITIA members (ATP, ITF, WTA, Tennis Australia, French Tennis Federation, Wimbledon, and USTA), as well as any national associations, whether in a playing or coaching capacity.
Match-fixing, which undermines the integrity of the sport, is an issue that exists within the realm of tennis. Over the past few years, the ITIA, an independent organization established by its members to uphold and protect the integrity of professional tennis worldwide, has frequently exposed instances of match-fixing involving players on the ATP circuit.
One notable case involved a group of players led by Master Sargsyan, an Armenian individual who orchestrated the largest network of fixed matches in tennis history. Furthermore, players such as Aslan Karatsev from Russia and Nikoloz Basilashvili from Georgia were also subject to investigations in 2022 regarding suspicious matches during challenging periods in their careers.
