Despite the fact that it has been nearly 15 years since Carmelo Anthony forced his way out of Denver in a trade to the New York Knicks, there are still lingering animosities between Melo and his former head coach George Karl.
Leading up to and during the President’s Day Weekend, the 39-year-old Anthony and the 72-year-old Karl have been exchanging jabs on social media following Melo’s remarks about their time together on his podcast.
The exchange began on the 16th when Karl responded to some of Melo’s comments about their past in Denver, stating:
“Hey Carmelo, let’s not revisit the past. You’re recounting stories from 20 years ago. Let’s move forward. And by the way, you were overrated and you wish your game was as efficient as Detlef’s.”
After Melo responded to that video with a series of laughing emojis, Karl then questioned, “We all know you’re passive aggressive, Melo, so be honest. What does this mean?”
Over the next few days, Karl continued to criticize Melo, claiming that he was an inexperienced and overrated player during their time together. He also praised Detlef, stating that he is one of the best international players and the most efficient. Additionally, Karl expressed that he is the only one in Denver who still believes the Nuggets should honor Melo.
Karl even conducted a Twitter poll asking NBA fans if they think Carmelo should be honored for his best years, which were in Denver under his coaching. The poll resulted in 46% of voters in favor, 41% saying no, and 11% unsure. Karl used these results as an opportunity to propose appearing on Melo’s podcast to discuss and resolve their differences.
Karl’s argument about Melo’s best years being in Denver holds merit, considering the lack of success he brought to the New York Knicks and his underwhelming performances in his final seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Portland Trailblazers, and Los Angeles Lakers.
