George Russell stated that Formula 1 still has a long way to go in ensuring driver safety in a crucial area. The sport puts immense strain on the drivers’ bodies, as seen in the extreme heat of the 2023 season. This not only affected the cars but also posed challenges for the drivers themselves. Russell openly criticized Formula 1 for their inadequate efforts in addressing the issues faced at the Lusail Circuit. He had previously highlighted the risks associated with the ban on tire blankets in the sport.
To address the heat-related concerns, the FIA permitted the use of new cooling ducts near the driver’s cockpit. This allowed for better airflow and helped keep the drivers cool. Russell recalled the high temperatures experienced during the previous year’s Qatar GP, reaching up to 40 degrees. Additionally, the horrific crash in the Bahrain GP led to an increase in the thickness of racing suits to enhance fire resistance. However, this resulted in higher body temperatures for the drivers during races.
The drivers’ body temperatures reaching nearly 40 degrees indicated that they were on the brink of requiring hospitalization after the race. Russell himself had to retire from a race last year due to feeling unwell at the circuit. He emphasized that the measures taken so far were only a “very small” step and not sufficient to ensure maximum safety for the drivers.
George Russell expressed optimism about the progress and performance of Mercedes’ W15 challenger. He stated that the W15 provided a more enjoyable driving experience compared to its predecessor, the W14. As a result, the Brackley team is hopeful of achieving excellent results throughout the season alongside Russell and his teammate.
Contrary to aiming for a perfect setup with the car during testing, Russell clarified that the team’s goal was to maximize mileage for learning and further developments throughout the season. He emphasized that the car felt much improved to drive. However, he also acknowledged that the car’s speed was more important than its overall feel.
Brackley will do their utmost to support Lewis Hamilton in finishing the season strongly and potentially challenging for the championship. However, the impressive pace and performance demonstrated by Red Bull during testing have instilled fear among rival teams on the grid. The seven-time world champion himself accepted that Red Bull is likely to emerge as the winners in the season-opening race in Bahrain.
