The weather overlay on Google Maps is a feature that was first introduced on iPhones but was not available on Android devices. Google has not revealed its plans for this feature on Android, but a few months ago, a small group of users started seeing weather information on Google Maps. This was just a test conducted by Google with a limited number of users. However, according to a recent report, the company is now expanding the availability of this feature to more devices.
The rollout is happening in stages, so not everyone will see the weather information on Google Maps. If you’re lucky, you may see a small weather icon in the top left corner of the screen, showing the current conditions, temperature, and AQI score. Tapping on this icon will bring up a full weather overlay with more information, including the forecast for the next few hours and “feels like” information. You can also expand the air quality data to get more details about the AQI score.
One of the features that I really liked on the iPhone, which is now also available on Android devices, is the automatic update of weather information as you browse the map on Google Maps. This means that the weather data will be automatically updated based on the location you are exploring. So if you are planning a trip to multiple destinations, you can see the current temperature for each location. Google Maps also allows you to expand the forecast and get more information about the weather at your destinations, helping you plan your route more accurately.
It seems that this feature is not tied to a specific version of the app. However, the report mentioned above suggests that the Google Maps weather layer appeared in version 11.113.x. I have installed the same version on my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, but I don’t see the weather icon. This indicates that Google is rolling out this feature through server-side updates.
Although the company has not officially announced this new feature on Google Maps, it is about time that Google reduces the gap between the Android and iOS versions of its navigation app. In addition to the weather overlay, Google Maps is also getting other capabilities, including Android Auto. Another useful feature that is making its way to Android Auto is the ability to save your parking location. This feature has been available on Android devices for years and now allows users to continue using Google Maps for step-by-step directions to their address after they park their cars. It serves as an all-in-one navigation solution both inside and outside of the car.
