Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley was terminated in the middle of the season due to his inability to maximize the team’s capabilities. As a result, the Chargers were in need of a new head coach during the offseason. Fortunately, they were able to secure an interview with Jim Harbaugh, the 60-year-old coach who recently led the Michigan Wolverines to a National Championship victory.
The Chargers prioritized finding stability in their next head coach, and they were fortunate enough to hire Jim Harbaugh, who previously coached at Michigan. Harbaugh has wasted no time in making changes to the coaching staff and bringing in his own personnel. According to reports from Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Greg Roman, a highly respected offensive mind, is expected to join Harbaugh’s staff as the Chargers’ offensive coordinator. However, this has yet to be officially confirmed.
If Harbaugh does indeed select Greg Roman as his offensive coordinator, he will have filled all the key positions on his coaching staff. Roman boasts over 25 years of experience in the NFL and has worked closely with Harbaugh in the past. He began his coaching career in 1995 with the Carolina Panthers and later served as an assistant coach under Harbaugh at Stanford. When Harbaugh moved on to the San Francisco 49ers, Roman followed suit and became their offensive coordinator. During his time with the 49ers, Roman helped guide the team to a Super Bowl appearance in 2012. After Harbaugh’s departure from the 49ers, Roman joined the coaching staff of Harbaugh’s brother, John Harbaugh, at the Baltimore Ravens. Now, Roman is reuniting with Jim Harbaugh as he takes on the role of coach for the Chargers.
With the addition of Greg Roman as the presumed offensive coordinator, Jim Harbaugh’s coaching staff for the Chargers appears to be complete. Roman’s extensive experience and track record of success make him an ideal candidate for the position. He has previously worked with notable quarterbacks such as Collin Kaepernick, Lamar Jackson, Alex Smith, and David Carr. Roman played a significant role in helping Jackson secure the league MVP award during his time as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator. Harbaugh hopes that Roman can tap into the potential of Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert in a similar manner. Only time will tell how much of an impact Jim Harbaugh can make in turning the Chargers’ fortunes around in just one offseason.
