On the evening of 14th November, a ceremony took place at the Niranjan Shah Stadium where the Saurashtra Cricket Association honored and recognized individuals. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, , was present at the event and officially announced the captaincy for the Indian team in the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup.
Shah addressed the audience, which included the Indian team and members of the media. He confirmed that Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian side in the 2024 T20 World Cup, with Hardik Pandya serving as the vice-captain.
Sharma had been absent from T20I cricket for more than 13 months before making a comeback during the Afghanistan series in January 2024. Despite facing a couple of early dismissals, he concluded the series with a century.
During Sharma’s absence, Pandya had taken over the captaincy of the Indian T20I side. However, Pandya has been sidelined due to injury since the 2023 ODI World Cup, causing him to miss the T20I series against Australia and the South Africa tour.
Following their runner-up finish in the 2023 ODI World Cup, Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, assured fans that India will emerge as champions in the 2024 T20 World Cup. He emphasized that this accomplishment can only be achieved under the leadership of Rohit Sharma.
India is scheduled to play the third Test match of the five-match series in Rajkot on 15th February. The team is uncertain about the availability of Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul, both of whom sustained injuries during the first Test. Sarfaraz Khan is likely to make his Test debut, while Shreyas Iyer has been excluded from the squad.
