Holger Rune revealed that he received an overwhelming number of messages following a false report that claimed he would be appointing Rennae Stubbs, Serena Williams’ former coach, as his new coach. Shortly after parting ways with coach Severin Luthi, Rune also decided to separate from Boris Becker. Stubbs, who previously worked as a coach/advisor for Williams during the 2022 US Open, expressed her availability to Rune after his split with Luthi and Becker. On February 7th, Stubbs wrote on X, “@holgerrune2003 I have some free time.” However, this statement was taken out of context and exaggerated by FirstSportz, who posted a misleading poster stating, “Holger Rune to appoint Rennae Stubbs as new coach after Boris Becker?” As a result, Stubbs was contacted by friends and colleagues who questioned if she was indeed becoming Rune’s new coach. In response, Stubbs wrote on X, “I have been sent this by MANY people asking ‘is this true?’ No it’s not! I don’t know who put this out but you’re a group of individuals to do so without any evidence. My goodness!” Rune also addressed the situation on X, stating, “Yes, many people also confronted me about this (laughing emoji). Let them talk. There are not enough female coaches on the tour though.” Stubbs replied, “Agreed, pal.” Additionally, Stubbs openly acknowledged a fan who mentioned that she once referred to Rune as “punchable” due to his behavior. Stubbs explained, “Yes, I 100% said it, and he would probably agree that there have been instances in his past where his on-court behavior warranted that response. However, I would also say that he has made tremendous progress in this area over the past year. I’m sure someone has advised him on that as well. That’s how it works.” Meanwhile, Rune’s decision to part ways with Luthi and Becker came as a surprise to many. After adding Becker to his coaching staff in late 2023, Rune experienced a significant improvement in his performance. During the offseason, Rune confirmed that Becker would continue coaching him in 2024 and also announced the hiring of Roger Federer’s former coach, Severin Luthi. However, after a shocking loss in the second round of the Australian Open to Arthur Cazaux, Rune felt compelled to make a drastic change. Recent reports indicate that Rune has now added Kenneth Carlsen to his team.
