has very few remaining supporters. This is a result of the backlash he received after his wife, ‘s book How to be a WAG was published in 2010. Although it was intended as satire, fight fans quickly began to berate the couple. Following the lead of and , they even went so far as to portray Garry as a victim of celebrity entanglement. Prior to his fight against Geoff Neal at UFC 298, ‘The Future’ discussed his personal life.
Ian Garry withdrew from UFC 296 at the last minute due to a supposed case of pneumonia. At the time, he was concerned for the safety of his family amidst the controversy. He also criticized Sean Strickland and Colby Covington for the unwanted attention he received. Here is what Garry said:
‘Tarzan’ had mocked Garry for his supposed victim status. Strickland made this comment because Garry married a 40-year-old wife he referred to as a “gold-digger.” Meanwhile, fellow welterweight Colby Covington made explicit remarks about Garry’s wife during the pre-fight press conference for UFC 296. Garry believes that these two individuals represent a group of trash-talkers who go beyond the boundaries of sportsmanship.
Consequently, Garry has vowed to defeat Covington for disrespecting his wife, but only after UFC 298. Garry was originally scheduled to fight Neal at UFC 292, but Neal pulled out. Garry went on to fight and defeat a replacement opponent instead. It remains to be seen if Garry will be able to defeat Neal and potentially face Covington in the future.
The promotion is returning for its second pay-per-view event of 2024. UFC 298, featuring a stacked fight card, will take place on Saturday at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Before Garry and Neal square off this Saturday, they attended the Fight Week Media Day. Amidst various controversies, Garry stated that he sees online hate as a sign of success in his UFC career. However, he draws the line at personal attacks that involve his immediate family.
