Just a year ago, it appeared as though the Houston Texans had discovered a valuable find in the fourth round. RB Dameon Pierce came close to achieving a 1,000-yard rookie season and was a strong contender for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year until his campaign was cut short by injuries. However, his second season was far from impressive. He struggled to find any room to maneuver, often colliding with offensive linemen and defenders before running lanes could even form. While the Texans’ struggling offensive line may have played a part, backup Devin Singletary proved to be much more effective in both the running and passing game, indicating that it wasn’t a matter of design. Now, it seems that Pierce’s job may be in jeopardy. According to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Texans may attempt to acquire Saquon Barkley or Derrick Henry in free agency (via JPA Football).

Henry possesses an intimate knowledge of the division, but Tennessee Titans fans may never forgive him for joining a rival team within the division. While he has expressed his desire to remain with the organization for the duration of his career, he also hinted at a potential departure late last season. As for Barkley, the New York Giants have been hesitant to commit to a long-term contract, and he could choose to leave if they do not place him under the franchise tag once again. Regardless of the circumstances, both players would represent a significant upgrade and serve as a valuable weapon for C.J. Stroud. © 2023
