The Israeli women’s basketball team emerged victorious in their match against Ireland, with a final score of 87-57, during the initial game of the 2025 Women’s EuroBasket qualifier. However, the focus of the night was not solely on the outcome or the gameplay itself.
Prior to and after the game, the Irish team refused to engage in the customary handshake with their Israeli counterparts. Additionally, they chose not to stand at center court during the national anthem. Basketball Ireland explained that this decision was a direct response to recent statements made by Israeli players and coaching staff, which included inflammatory and completely false accusations of antisemitism disseminated through official Israeli federation channels.
In their statement, Ireland expressed full support for their players’ choice to abstain from participating in pre and postgame ceremonies involving Israel.

A day before the match, Israeli player Dor Sa’ar referred to the Irish as “quite antisemitic” in an interview published on the official website of the Israeli Basketball Association.
“It is widely known that they harbor strong antisemitic sentiments, and this is no secret. Perhaps that is why we anticipate a challenging game,” Sa’ar stated. “We must demonstrate our superiority and secure a victory. Among ourselves, we discuss this matter, fully aware of their animosity towards us. We will always give our all on the field, especially in this particular game.”
Sa’ar made her debut on the national team during Thursday’s triumph and mentioned that the controversy served as motivation for herself and her Israeli teammates.
“Representing our country is always a joy, particularly during times like these. I am thrilled that we emerged victorious, and I hope we can continue in this manner. I prefer not to delve into the political aspect, but it certainly provides us with determination and drive. We passionately sang our national anthem, demonstrating our pride. We must show the entire world that we are Israel and that we will persist.”
During the playing of the national anthem, Ireland did stand; however, they positioned themselves near their team bench, while Israel stood at center court, which is customary.
“I have been involved in sports for numerous years, and I have never witnessed such behavior in my life,” commented Israel’s head coach Sharon Drucker following the game.
“In every match, there are certain courtesies that are exchanged, such as handshakes and congratulations. They took an extreme stance, and today they faced the consequences of their actions.”
There were suggestions for Ireland to boycott the match altogether, but they were informed that failure to participate would result in a fine of up to $86,000 from FIBA Europe, as well as a five-year ban from future tournaments.
