NEW YORK JETS EYEING DEFENSIVE ADDITION
The New York Jets are making waves in the NFL offseason, and this time it’s on the defensive side of the ball. According to ESPN’s Matt Bowen, the Jets are the “perfect landing spot” for Washington Commanders safety Kamren Curl. With his highly instinctive play and versatility, Curl could be a valuable asset to the Jets’ defensive system under Robert Saleh.
While Curl’s on-the-ball production has been lacking recently, with no interceptions since his rookie season in 2020, he is still considered a solid professional. Pro Football Focus projects that Curl could sign a lucrative four-year, $50 million contract, making him one of the highest-paid safeties in the league.
The Jets currently have three safeties on their roster set to hit free agency, including Ashtyn Davis, Jordan Whitehead, and Chuck Clark. With only two safeties under contract for 2024, the Jets will need to make moves at the position. Adding Curl to their lineup would certainly raise eyebrows and bolster their defense.
Curl has been an underrated player in the NFL, consistently performing at a high level. His ability to line up anywhere on the field and his strong instincts make him a valuable asset. In his four-year career, he has appeared in 60 out of 67 possible games, accumulating impressive stats including 14 pass deflections, five sacks, three interceptions, and 385 total tackles.
While the Jets have a need for defensive reinforcements, it seems that the team’s focus and resources will primarily be directed towards improving their offense. With pressure from ownership, the Jets may prioritize offensive additions in the upcoming offseason.
In other news, Jets quarterback coach Rob Calabrese is rumored to be joining the Los Angeles Rams’ coaching staff. Although Calabrese is still listed as an employee on the Jets’ website, the team has made changes to their coaching staff, removing the names of Zach Azzanni and Taylor Embree. The Jets have reportedly hired Tony Dews and Shawn Jefferson as replacements for Azzanni and Embree, but the official announcements are yet to be made.
Rob Calabrese, a sports contributor, is still listed as the QB coach on the team website. However, Zach Azzani and Taylor Embree have been removed from the website. The team has not officially announced the additions of Tony Dews or Shawn Jefferson, and they are not listed on the website either.
If Calabrese leaves this offseason, he would be the third Jets offensive coach to do so. New York has made some changes to its staff, but they have mainly moved around lower-level staff members.
