Jon Jones Reacts to UFC Heavyweight Championship Win over Ciryl Gane in 2023.
Only nine weeks remain until UFC 300, but the highly anticipated pay-per-view event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas is still lacking a superstar headliner.
Jon Jones, the two-weight UFC champion, recently revealed in an interview with Submission Radio that he received a call from UFC’s Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell about potentially competing in the main event of the anniversary show. However, Jones turned down the offer.
According to Jones, Campbell said, “‘Jon, I know it’s only nine weeks away, but if there’s any chance you’re feeling up to it, man, it’d be awesome news for the community that you’re coming back and headlining one of the biggest events ever.'”
While Jones expressed gratitude for the offer, he explained that he declined because he wants to ensure he is fully prepared for his remaining events as he approaches the later stages of his career.
“I’m getting up there in age, and I only have a few more events left. I want to give those events my all and make sure that I come back 100 percent,” Jones stated.
The UFC president Dana White addressed the situation, stating, “Who knows who’s going to be the UFC 300 headliner.” He made these comments following the Power Slap 6 event in Las Vegas.
“It’s been interesting, I can tell you that,” White added. “Because, obviously, we want to deliver.”
White also mentioned that a fight between former two-time UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo and former pound-for-pound star Cody Garbrandt will be the first fight of the night.
As for the rest of the UFC 300 card, White stated, “If you look at the card where it sits today, every single fight could be a main event on a UFC Fight Night or a pay-per-view. We’ve got two more fights [left] that we’ve got to put together — we’re working on it.”
While Jones won’t be part of the UFC 300 card, one fighter who might make an appearance is Conor McGregor.
The former two-weight UFC champion teased a return to the Octagon for the event in a post on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter.
“McGregor on 300 seals the deal,” McGregor stated on January 26.
Michael Chandler, another UFC fighter, responded to McGregor’s post, saying, “I accept. See you soon.”
McGregor and Chandler have long been linked to a potential bout, which could take place on April 13 in Las Vegas. However, no official announcement has been made.
The details regarding the second fight that the UFC has yet to plan for UFC 300 remain unclear.
