Jordan Spieth’s weekend in Los Angeles did not go as planned. The golfer was removed from the competition after his second round of the Genesis Invitational due to a mistake on his scorecard.
He brought up this unfortunate incident again on Sunday in a congratulatory message to winner Hideki Matsuyama.
Matsuyama dominated the field in his final round, shooting a remarkable 62 at the Riviera Country Club. This is the lowest final round score in the history of the tournament.
Matsuyama had an impressive performance on Sunday, overcoming a six-shot deficit to claim victory. In the course of 18 holes, he made nine birdies and nine pars.
He even came close to making a hole-in-one!
When all was said and done, Matsuyama finished three strokes ahead of Luke List and Will Zalatoris, securing his first win of the season.
Jordan Spieth, who also competed in the Genesis Invitational, congratulated Matsuyama shortly after his victory.
“Great playing Hideki!” he said. “Just make sure to thoroughly check that scorecard…”
Spieth made a subtle reference to his own disqualification a few days earlier. He was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard, mistakenly recording a par instead of a bogey on his fourth hole of the day.
Spieth wanted to ensure that Matsuyama didn’t encounter the same issue after his record-breaking performance!
Through his congratulatory message, Spieth offered advice to his friend. First, always double-check the accuracy of the score. Second, maintain a sense of humor and don’t take oneself too seriously!
