Dan Quinn has been named the head coach of the Washington Commanders, and instead of retaining Eric Bieniemy as his offensive coordinator, Kliff Kingsbury has been hired for that position.
Previously, Kingsbury served as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals for four seasons. During his tenure, he had the opportunity to coach quarterback Kyler Murray, who achieved two Pro Bowl selections in 2020 and 2021.
According to Kingsbury, successful offenses in football rely on adapting to the strengths of the players and allowing them to excel in their respective roles. It is important not to ask them to do things they are not capable of. In his own words, “Being able to adapt to your personnel, do what you do best and not ask them to do what they can’t. … You got to be able to run the football in four-minute and throw it in two-minute.”
The Commanders’ current starting quarterback is Sam Howell, who had the highest number of interceptions in the NFL this season and was sacked more frequently than any other quarterback. With the No. 2 pick in the upcoming draft, it is likely that Washington will select a new quarterback.
While it may not be possible for Washington to acquire Caleb Williams from the University of Southern California, they should have the opportunity to choose someone like Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye.
Interestingly, Kingsbury spent this season as a senior offensive analyst at USC, where he had the privilege of coaching Williams. Additionally, in the past, he coached three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes when he was the head coach at Texas Tech University.
The Commanders have a talented wide receiver in Terry McLaurin, but they have much work to do overall, as they finished with a 4-13 record and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive year.
However, there is new ownership in the form of billionaire investor Josh Harris, and it seems that his group is committed to doing whatever it takes to restore the franchise to its former glory, reminiscent of the successful years in the 1980s and early 1990s.
