Kyle Larson completed a crucial test session in an IndyCar on Monday, gaining more familiarity with the open wheel machine before his debut at the Indianapolis 500 in May. Larson, the reigning champion of the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series, has been preparing for several months for “The Double,” a challenge that involves racing 1,100 miles in a single day at Indianapolis and then at Charlotte Motor Speedway later in the evening. Larson’s Indy 500 team is a collaboration between Hendrick Motorsports and Arrow McLaren. Only a few drivers have attempted this unique test, and Larson has been utilizing his team’s resources to prepare early for the challenge.
In October, Larson completed the Rookie Orientation Program at IMS, earning approval from series officials to participate in future sessions with multiple people on track. This week, he tested his open wheel car at the smaller Phoenix Raceway to push its limits. Larson found the experience on the smaller track to be more uncomfortable and challenging compared to the larger Indianapolis track. He had to focus on the timing of the corners and work on balancing the car, as it wasn’t perfect. Despite the differences, Larson felt that the IndyCar was not significantly different from the NASCAR chassis he’s used to, which could work in his favor for both races.
Larson is no stranger to exploring various forms of racing and often competes in dirt track sprint car races when he’s not participating in NASCAR. His versatility and experience in different machines have aided his IndyCar training, even though he has only had a few days on track. Larson believes that the characteristics of the IndyCar are similar to the Cup car, but the speed and responsiveness of the IndyCar make the moments happen much quicker. He acknowledges the benefit of experiencing those moments at a lower speed at Phoenix before tackling the higher speeds at Indianapolis. Larson also notes the importance of getting more practice with cockpit adjustments in an IndyCar, as it is a crucial aspect of driving the vehicle.
The 108th Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 are both scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 26.
