A whistleblower alleged that the President of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) made an effort to reverse a penalty imposed on Fernando Alonso.
The beginning of the 2024 Formula 1 season was marred by controversies involving Christian Horner, the team principal of Red Bull, and accusations against Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the president of the FIA.
The reigning champions, Red Bull, faced scrutiny that was further intensified by a report from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) which claimed that Ben Sulayem interfered in a penalty decision during the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
According to a whistleblower, the FIA President tried to overturn a penalty imposed on Fernando Alonso.
In response, the FIA announced that its compliance officer is investigating the allegations to ensure that proper procedures are followed.
Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time World Champion, expressed his disappointment with the current state of Formula 1.
Speaking on the eve of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Hamilton stated, “As a passionate fan of the sport, it is truly disheartening to witness the current situation. It does not present a positive image to the outside world.
“I believe that this is a crucial moment for the sport to uphold its values and hold itself accountable for its actions.
“It is imperative that we demonstrate transparency and I sincerely hope to see progress going forward.
“I hope that this is not a recurring theme throughout the year, but it does shed light on some of the issues that exist within the sport.
“When we talk about diversity and inclusion, it is essential that everyone feels comfortable in this environment, and unfortunately, that is not currently the case.”

When asked if this situation reminded him of the ‘Piranha Club’ behavior mentioned by former McLaren team boss Ron Dennis, Hamilton responded in a vague manner, indicating the complexity of the problems within Formula 1.
George Russell, Hamilton’s teammate and a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, echoed the call for transparency, emphasizing the drivers’ desire to have all the facts presented openly.
