Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play in his fourth Super Bowl in just six years as a starting quarterback. Mahomes, speaking at Super Bowl Opening Night, acknowledged that reaching the Super Bowl is the ultimate goal and that he appreciates the chance every time. He also emphasized the uncertainty of whether this will be his last Super Bowl and expressed his gratitude for being part of a great organization with talented teammates.
The Chiefs are preparing to compete in their second consecutive Super Bowl after defeating the Philadelphia Eagles in last year’s championship game. If they win against the San Francisco 49ers, they will become the first team since the 2003-04 New England Patriots to win back-to-back Super Bowls. Mahomes, who entered the league as a first-round pick in 2017, has already won two Super Bowls. With a victory on Sunday, he could join the elite group of quarterbacks who have won at least three Super Bowls, including Troy Aikman, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, and Tom Brady.
Despite his success, Mahomes stated that he is not currently focused on surpassing Brady’s record of seven Super Bowl wins. He acknowledged that he is still far from halfway and is primarily focused on being the best player he can be. Mahomes recognizes the importance of the team around him and is determined to do whatever it takes to defeat a strong 49ers team and secure his third ring. He humorously added that maybe in 15 years, he will consider the possibility of approaching seven Super Bowl wins, but for now, it seems like a distant goal.
Although Mahomes had fewer passing yards and touchdowns this season compared to 2019, he has elevated his performance in the postseason. In three playoff games this year, he has thrown for 718 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
