A fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs attempted to gain viral attention after Auston Matthews achieved a hat trick. However, his actions resulted in negative publicity rather than positive recognition.
This incident took place during the Leafs’ overtime victory against the Philadelphia Flyers on February 15. Matthews successfully completed his hat trick during the second period, and while the celebration unfolded, a Leafs supporter decided to throw a hat onto the ice. Unfortunately, it was not his own hat.
The hat in question was a fedora worth $300, belonging to John Hamilton, a 73-year-old season ticket holder. Hamilton expressed his surprise when he witnessed his hat being thrown onto the ice.
A video captured the fan awkwardly looking at the camera before tossing Hamilton’s hat over the glass. In response, Hamilton immediately confronted the fan, causing the fan’s face to turn red as he faced the criticism from the long-time season ticket holder.
Hamilton stated, “He sat down in his seat and became visibly embarrassed due to the surrounding crowd. I believe he did not anticipate such a reaction and was likely thinking, ‘Oops, what just happened?'”
Fortunately, both the game and the hat were not irretrievably lost. Within approximately five minutes, Hamilton regained possession of his fedora after alerting the ice crew, who threw it back over the glass.
Although the fan who threw the hat never apologized to Hamilton, the individual filming the video expressed numerous apologies and even bought beers for the group.
“He apologized several times, around four or five times, and upon returning to the (Air Canada) Signature Club, he instructed the staff to provide beers for me and my three friends,” Hamilton explained.
Hamilton also mentioned that he did not see the fan who threw his fedora again after the second intermission, suggesting that the individual may have been ejected from the arena.
