The Chicago Bears may have a fresh face at quarterback in the upcoming season. With the top pick in hand, it is widely believed that they will select Caleb Williams, a standout from USC who is regarded as one of the most talented prospects in NFL history. Consequently, Justin Fields finds himself in an awkward position and is highly likely to be traded during the offseason or at least be part of trade discussions. Given these circumstances, former Bears head coach Matt Nagy was asked for his thoughts on his former quarterback. Speaking as the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs during Super Bowl media day, Nagy had nothing but admiration for his former student, predicting continued growth and success in the league. Nagy acknowledged the challenges that Fields faced in Chicago, emphasizing that they would only make him stronger. He expressed, “You have to learn and evolve from those experiences, and I believe he has done just that. Some individuals progress faster than others, but one thing is certain: he is headed in the right direction with his development, and that is crucial.” Nagy is confident that he and Fields are still on an upward trajectory, acknowledging the adversity that Fields has encountered and emphasizing his resilience. The irony, however, is that Nagy played a role in contributing to that adversity. The Bears structured their entire offense around Andy Dalton, leaving Fields to work with backup players during the offseason. Furthermore, they failed to adapt their playbook and game plan to suit Fields’ unique skill set, leaving him ill-prepared and in a challenging position at the start of his professional career. Despite these setbacks, Fields has shown glimpses of promise and has already established himself as one of the top scramblers in the league. Nevertheless, it appears that the Bears let him down to some extent, and a change of scenery might be all he needs to truly shine.
