McLaren has officially launched their car for the 2024 Formula 1 season, known as the MCL38. Team principal Andrea Stella has acknowledged that the car has been improved in three key areas and will continue to undergo upgrades in the first half of 2024. Some of these developments were not ready in time for the season opener, but will be introduced later on. The MCL38 was revealed at a low-key event in January and underwent a shakedown at a wet Silverstone. The car will make its debut at the Bahrain Grand Prix in March.
Stella explained that the areas of improvement include aerodynamic performance, mechanical side, and interaction with the tires. He mentioned that these projects had potential, but could not be finalized in time for the launch car. However, they are expected to be introduced as updates in the early part of the season. Stella emphasized that the car has been designed to accommodate these updates and there are no restrictions from a layout perspective. He also mentioned that it may become more challenging to maintain a steep development rate towards the end of the season.
Regarding the improvements made to the MCL38, Stella stated that the car has achieved its three major objectives: improving aerodynamic efficiency, mechanical grip, and interaction with the tires. While he did not provide specific proportions, he confirmed that improvements have been made in all three areas and there is potential for further enhancements.
In addition to its performance upgrades, the MCL38 stands out visually from its predecessors. It is the first car to benefit from being developed at McLaren’s new state-of-the-art wind tunnel. Previously, the team had used Toyota’s old wind tunnel in Cologne, Germany. However, team principal Andreas Seidl recommended upgrading to simplify the aerodynamic process. McLaren’s new wind tunnel was opened in October 2023, four years after renovations began. The team has also invested in new equipment in the machine shop to improve the manufacturing process of car parts.
Stella highlighted that the MCL38 is the first car to benefit from the infrastructure projects that were discussed extensively in the previous year. It has been entirely developed in the new wind tunnel and produced in the new McLaren racing composite facility. The team is also evolving the machine shop to enhance the production of metal parts. These improvements have resulted in a more efficient manufacturing process, allowing for faster production and reduced outsourcing costs.
