Naomi Osaka returned to competitive play about a month ago following a year-long break due to her maternity leave. Her most recent match was against Caroline Garcia at the Australian Open 2024, where she was defeated by a previous winner of the WTA Finals.
This week, Osaka will be participating in the WTA 500 tournament in Abu Dhabi. Her main objective is to accumulate points and regain her rhythm after a prolonged period of inactivity. Playing matches is crucial for her to regain her physical and mental form.
“I believe it is important for me to play as many matches as possible at this moment. I am learning that winning is achievable every week and that my success is solely in my hands. Although it was challenging in Australia, I am determined to overcome this obstacle,” Osaka expressed.
She believes that her performance is improving day by day and hopes to continue progressing in the upcoming weeks. Osaka is known for setting high goals for herself and even achieving 25% of her desired outcome would be remarkable. Setting the goal of reaching the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam would have been unrealistic for her.
In her first match in the United Arab Emirates, Osaka will be facing Danielle Collins. She hopes to improve her ranking and avoid facing top-ranked players in the early rounds. However, even if she were to face the number one seed, Osaka still believes she has a chance to win and does not make excuses for herself.
During the interview, Osaka also mentioned how watching new videos of Shai, presumably her child, helps her feel refreshed and mentally at ease. Spending quality time with her child at home clears her mind and prevents her from feeling mentally drained.
“I feel optimistic about what the future holds, although I cannot fully describe the feeling. Every day, when I wake up and receive new videos of Shai, I feel rejuvenated and motivated,” Osaka shared.
