The Boston Celtics have acquired center Xavier Tillman from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for two second-round picks. This trade provides the Celtics with much-needed depth in their front court.
According to sources, the Memphis Grizzlies are sending F/C Xavier Tillman to the Boston Celtics in return for two second-round picks. The Celtics will be receiving a 2027 second round pick via the Atlanta Hawks and a 2030 second round pick via the Dallas Mavericks. Additionally, Lamar Stevens will be joining the Grizzlies as part of the deal.
This trade is highly beneficial for the Celtics, who have been lacking depth in the forward positions. Currently, Luke Kornet has been serving as their backup center to Kristaps Porzingis. However, Tillman brings a different skill-set to the table. His exceptional defense alone should secure him the role of backup center.
Xavier Tillman has proven himself as a reliable rotational big man since being drafted by the Sacramento Kings in the second round of the 2020 NBA Draft from Michigan State. He initially made his mark with the Memphis Grizzlies as a rotational player. Although he has started some games, he has recently been overshadowed by the emergence of Santi Aldama and GG Jackson. Despite a recent knee injury, Tillman’s contributions to the Celtics should not be hindered.
Throughout the season, Tillman has been averaging 6.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. Additionally, he provides a defensive presence with a steal and a block per night, which is exactly what the Celtics need from their bench. It is possible that the Celtics will continue to make moves as they aim to maximize their chances of competing for a championship. With the addition of Tillman, the Celtics now boast a deep front court consisting of Jayson Tatum, Al Horford, Kristaps Porzingis, and Xavier Tillman.
