The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a relatively successful season in 2023, emerging as the champions of the NFC South and easily defeating the Philadelphia Eagles, the reigning conference champions, by a whopping 23 points in the Wild card round of the playoffs.
Furthermore, it appears that the Buccaneers may have discovered their long-term quarterback in Baker Mayfield, who had a remarkable year and finally lived up to the expectations that had been building over his previous five seasons in the league.
Liam Coen, the newly appointed offensive coordinator for Tampa Bay, expressed his desire to have Mayfield as part of the team for the upcoming season. Coen, who previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, had the opportunity to work with Mayfield during his five-game stint with the Rams last season.
Coen stated, “I want him to be here. It’s more of a ‘want’ than a certainty. He is undoubtedly one of the reasons why I joined the team.”
Following his departure from the Rams, Mayfield signed a one-year contract with the Buccaneers, making him a free agent once the offseason officially commences. It is widely anticipated that Mayfield will receive a lucrative contract offer, and all indications suggest that Tampa Bay is the frontrunner to secure his services.
During the 2023 season, Mayfield showcased his abilities by throwing for an impressive 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns. This outstanding performance earned him his first Pro Bowl selection. Additionally, he demonstrated his prowess in the playoffs, amassing 337 passing yards and three touchdown passes in the team’s victory over the injured Eagles.
Nonetheless, the Buccaneers face the challenge of retaining their star wide receiver, Mike Evans, who is also set to become a free agent. As a result, the team needs to carefully manage their salary cap space to maintain their status as a formidable playoff contender in the upcoming season.
Despite the potential obstacles, it is evident that securing Mayfield’s services is the team’s top priority. Finally, after years of anticipation, Mayfield has fulfilled the promise that was evident when he initially entered the NFL in 2018.
