New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is stepping up in a significant way for animal shelters, as the 3-time All-Star has committed to contributing $1,000 for each home run he achieves in the upcoming season.
I believe we can all concur that I wish for Alonso to break the Home-Run single-season record!
“The Alonso Foundation and I will be making a donation of $1,000 per home run to support animal rescues. Our main objective is to address the issue of relocating animals from kill shelters, so we will be assisting as many animals as possible – whether it involves covering transportation costs, providing beds, toys, supplies, blankets – the whole package!” Alonso shared with the press this morning.
“We will be allocating a certain amount of funds to rescues specifically for taking in animals – particularly dogs from kill shelters,” the 29-year-old added.
And if that’s what it takes for Alonso to gain extra motivation to hit home runs at CitiField, then he fully embraces it. “Hopefully, there will be plenty of home runs this year!” he exclaimed.
Immediately, fans on social media began speculating on the amount of money Alonso will now be donating.
Aside from the obvious act of kindness that Alonso will be performing to aid rescue dogs, it also serves as a smart public relations move for him.
Numerous Mets fans have been urging billionaire owner Steve Cohen to re-sign Alonso and make him a lifelong Met. In the previous season, his 48 home runs ranked him third in all of baseball, while his 118 RBIs placed him second. However, he still lacks a long-term contract beyond this year’s one-year, $20.5 million deal negotiated through arbitration.
But now that Pete Alonso is also lending a hand to DOGS in addition to everything else, it’s time for Uncle Stevie to open up his checkbook and do what’s right.
