Nickelodeon Takes a Playful Jab at Travis Kelce During 2024 Super Bowl
During the 2024 Super Bowl broadcast, Nickelodeon decided to have some fun with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. The popular children’s network referred to Kelce as “Taylor Swift’s boyfriend” in an on-screen graphic. They also made sure to highlight that Kelce is “good at football.”
But Nickelodeon’s playful jab at Kelce was just one of the ways they separated themselves from CBS. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was shown wearing a pirate hat with a parrot on his shoulder, while beloved Nickelodeon characters SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star joined the broadcast booth.
Other SpongeBob characters, Sandy Cheeks and Larry the Lobster, also made appearances during the coverage of the 2024 Super Bowl. And of course, every touchdown was accompanied by slime time.
Kelce wasn’t the only NFL figure that Nickelodeon had fun with. Before the Super Bowl, the network dropped “look-a-likes” for Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid. The comparisons of Reid to Harold SquarePants and Mahomes to Otto Rocket were deemed spot on by many.
San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey also received some playful criticism from Patrick Star after an early fumble. The Nickelodeon character advised McCaffrey to “firmly grasp” the football after coughing it up.
In addition to the football action, Nickelodeon gave shoutouts to celebrities such as LeBron James, Vin Diesel, Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, Samuel L. Jackson, Doja Cat, and Oprah Winfrey.
The simulcast of the Super Bowl on CBS and Nickelodeon aims to appeal to younger audiences. Whether you’re watching on CBS or Nickelodeon, there’s something for everyone to enjoy during this year’s Super Bowl.
