Italian automaker Pagani Automobili has drawn inspiration from the NTT IndyCar Series and its innovative aeroscreen driver safety device for the design of its latest hypercar, the Huayra R Evo. This limited-edition model, powered by a V12 engine, is expected to have a price tag exceeding $3 million once the final pricing is determined.
According to Horacio Pagani, the founder and chief designer of the company, the idea for the Huayra R Evo’s design came to him while watching an Indy race in Nashville. The sight of the single-seater cars with their aeroscreens sparked the concept of creating a car with polycarbonate surfaces for protection, along with the option to remove the roof panels for a fully immersive experience with the air and the engine’s captivating sound.
Pagani’s goal was to create a visually appealing car with harmonious lines and a strong character. The result is a car that stays true to the Huayra R lineage, a model beloved by Pagani’s customers.
The Huayra R Evo incorporates a 50-percent increase in downforce, drawing inspiration from both IndyCar and Le Mans prototype aerodynamic concepts. Pagani also took inspiration from the elegance of Le Mans cars from the ’60s and ’70s, particularly the long-tail prototypes known as “codalunga.” The company meticulously addressed aerodynamics, design, and every minute detail to meet the high standards synonymous with Pagani Automobili and the expectations of its discerning customers.
This meticulous approach has resulted in optimal aerodynamic performance and ensured safe and predictable behavior in all conditions. The Huayra R Evo boasts an impressive 45-percent increase in downforce and a 21-percent increase in aerodynamic efficiency without compromising resistance.
One notable feature is the open roof, which surprisingly enhances aerodynamic efficiency. The open-top configuration increases both front and rear vertical load, contributing to an additional five percent increase in total downforce.
