RICK PITINO IS FED UP
In a shocking turn of events, St. John’s veteran coach Rick Pitino expressed his frustration with his players and his first year at the school. Following a disappointing 68-62 loss to Seton Hall, Pitino did not hold back in his postgame remarks. “We are so unathletic that we can’t guard anybody without fouling,” Pitino vented.
Pitino, known for his successful coaching career, admitted that this has been the most unenjoyable experience of his lifetime. The Red Storm, who had high expectations entering the season, have now fallen to a 14-12 record, losing eight of their last ten games.
During his rant, Pitino specifically called out several players, including starters Chris Ledlum and Joel Soriano. He criticized their lack of lateral quickness and overall speed on the court. Pitino also pointed out weaknesses in Sean Conway, Brady Dunlap, and Drissa Traore.
Having left Iona to take the St. John’s coaching position last March, Pitino acknowledged that he knew it was going to be a difficult year after spending the summer with the team. “We kind of lost this season with the way we recruited,” he admitted. The 71-year-old coach expressed disappointment in recruiting players who do not align with his coaching style. While he acknowledged their effort, he emphasized their lack of toughness.
In a surprising revelation, Pitino disclosed that he had tried to keep freshman guard AJ Storr on the team. However, Storr made the decision to transfer to Wisconsin, where he has thrived and become a key contributor, averaging 16.5 points per game.
With five regular-season games remaining, St. John’s hopes to salvage their season. Their next matchup is against Georgetown on Wednesday.
