With the possibility of precipitation looming at Imola, the venue for the upcoming round of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship, Porsche is fully equipped to handle any wet conditions that may arise. Jonathan Diuguid, the managing director of Porsche Penske Motorsport, expressed the team’s readiness during a media call prior to the race. Diuguid acknowledged that while the drivers may have differing opinions, he believes that racing in the rain adds excitement and allows the drivers to showcase their skills. He assured that Porsche is prepared and eagerly anticipates the challenge.
Both Matt Campbell and Kevin Estre, drivers of the #5 and #6 factory Porsche 963s respectively, echoed their boss’s sentiments. Campbell expressed his enthusiasm for racing in the rain, emphasizing that it adds a new dimension to the competition, especially on a demanding track like Imola. He anticipated a challenging race with the potential for yellow flags and safety cars, but ultimately believed that it would create an exciting mix. Estre, on the other hand, acknowledged the fun aspect of racing in wet conditions but also recognized the risks involved. He noted that rain can either spice up the race or ruin it, depending on the team’s performance in dry conditions. Nevertheless, he expressed a willingness to face whatever conditions come their way.
If rain does make an appearance at Imola, Porsche may have an advantage over their competitors as they previously conducted wet weather testing at the circuit earlier in the year. Diuguid acknowledged that although it was initially disappointing to have rain during their testing at a new circuit, he believes that the characteristics of Imola, such as its older layout, prominent kerbs, and bumps, will create a distinct and challenging dynamic for the drivers.
When it comes to Porsche’s specific preparation for rainy conditions, Diuguid expressed confidence due to the team’s consistent driver lineup from 2023 to 2024. He highlighted that all the drivers have had the opportunity to race or test in the rain, allowing them to adapt to the unique demands of rain tires, particularly the Michelin rain tires for the Hypercars. Diuguid concluded by stating that the drivers are well-prepared for the challenges that wet conditions may present.
