Redtail Overland is well-known in the recreational vehicle market for its revolutionary Skyloft rooftop tent (RTT), which was unveiled in 2020. It quickly gained attention due to its unique features not typically found in a rooftop tent, such as a sturdy carbon fiber construction, insulation, integrated heating, dual pane windows, and off-grid power capabilities. However, the high price tag of $20,000 prevented it from achieving the commercial success the company had hoped for.
Now, instead of offering the Redtail Skyloft as a standalone camping solution, the company has decided to incorporate it as an exclusive feature in a state-of-the-art luxury RV called the Skyloft Van. This decision was made after witnessing the immense interest it generated in the van life community. The Skyloft Van is built on a Mercedes-Benz 3500 XD AWD 170″ high roof cargo van and is designed to comfortably accommodate a family of four who love to travel. It’s important to note that Redtail took charge of the entire conversion process to ensure that the final product matches the premium quality, thoughtful design, and meticulous attention to detail of the Skyloft itself.
The integration of the rooftop camper enhances both practicality and comfort. Prospective customers can now enjoy a fully-fledged separate bedroom on the upper level, while having more space on the ground floor for living and dining. The interior of the Skyloft Van exudes luxury and modernity, with wood veneers, porcelain countertops, and a combination of ambient and direct lighting that creates a warm and inviting ambiance. Redtail guarantees an “ultra-luxe experience from top to bottom” with this design.
The climate-controlled hard-sided RTT by Redtail serves as the foundation for the campervan. It is an integral part of the vehicle, with an interior hatch providing access to the rooftop area. When not in use, the tent can be neatly packed into a compact package measuring 110 inches in length, 60 inches in width, and 11 inches in height (2.8 m x 1.5 m x 30 cm). The fully insulated hard walls, lockable doors, impact-resistant windows, dimmable interior lighting, and heating and AC systems controlled by a dedicated thermostat make winter camping an enticing option for those who have yet to try it.
Equipped with a comfortable 78 x 55 x 3.5-inch (198 x 140 x 9 cm) foam mattress, the Skyloft provides two additional sleeping berths and creates a cozy home-like atmosphere during travels. The upstairs bedroom, with its plush mattress and full-height panoramic window at the rear that opens completely, offers breathtaking views of the surroundings and will undoubtedly become the most sought-after space in the van for future owners.

In terms of the downstairs living area, Redtail’s layout may not be groundbreaking, but it certainly impresses with its luxurious appearance and modern comforts. There are two separate lounging spaces, one makeshift area at the front of the van utilizing the front and second-row seats, along with a flip-up work table that doubles as a desk. At the rear of the van, there is a proper lounging area.
This rear space is situated on a raised platform, two steps above the Sprinter’s floor. It consists of a U-shaped sofa/dining bench and a swivel table in the center, mounted on an adjustable-height pedestal. During the day, this multifunctional space serves as a living room and dining area, and at night, the central table can be lowered to create a double bed. For entertainment, a wall-mounted smart TV has been added, which can be swiveled out of the way when not in use.
The center of the van is occupied by a compact yet functional wet bath and galley. The bathroom resembles a typical van washroom, featuring a cassette toilet, a shower with a removable teak floor, and a large mirror on the door.

The kitchen is beautifully designed, with wood-veneered foam-core cabinetry, porcelain countertops, and state-of-the-art appliances. Although not visible, there is a dual-burner induction cooktop integrated directly below the main counter, making cooking a breeze. Additionally, a convection microwave oven and a Vitrifrigo double-drawer fridge/freezer are neatly incorporated on the opposite side of the van.
Storage needs have been well-considered, with clever small-space solutions such as drawers under the second-row seats, various cabinets, and a garage space beneath the raised lounge. This garage area is perfect for storing sports equipment, camping gear, and larger items of luggage.
Designed for expeditions and outdoor adventures, the Skyloft Van is equipped with all-terrain 35″ tires, allowing owners to venture into remote wilderness areas. The van also features upgraded suspension, a skid plate, a custom front bumper, front and rear winches, off-road lighting, a motorized awning with a wind sensor, and bike racks, among other enhancements.

Regardless of the season, users can enjoy maximum comfort inside the van, thanks to a diesel heating system that provides floor heating in the main area, split-zone air heating, and a 12,000-BTU air conditioning system. The package also includes a 151-liter fresh water tank, a 113-liter waste water tank, on-demand hot water, and a UV and carbon purification system. The electrical system comprises 330 watts of solar panels, a 14-kWh lithium battery, and a 3,200-W inverter.
The Skyloft Van is a luxurious and technologically advanced vehicle that boasts an impressive design. Its elevated level of opulence is sure to come with a hefty price tag. Redtail Overland, the company behind this remarkable creation, states that the starting price for a fully equipped van is a staggering $530,000. This exorbitant cost surpasses the budget of the average camping enthusiast seeking a comfortable and convenient abode on wheels. However, it’s important to note that Redtail intends to produce a limited number of units annually, positioning the Skyloft Van as an exclusive and specialized product.
