In late January, Rivian released a software update for internal testing. The update, known as 2024.03, brought several new features such as quick controls, individual passenger windows locking, and improvements to ride quality. Additionally, it included a mysterious feature called “Gear Guard’s Late-Night Adventure” that left many users puzzled. Now, as the EV startup rolls out the 2024.03.02 build to customers, it is evident that the mysterious feature may be deemed useless by many. However, it also hints at a significant upcoming change.
The “Gear Guard’s Late-Night Adventure” feature is essentially a movie clip. It can be found in the Gear Guard starred clips section and currently consists of only one video titled “Late Night Road Trip.” This video is already available on Rivian’s YouTube channel, so it may not seem like a big deal. However, it actually indicates the future entertainment capabilities of the Rivian infotainment system. This opens the door for additional options, including streaming services like Netflix and YouTube, which is a welcome addition to the system.
Alongside these new features, the software update also brings improvements to the ride feel and ride height for on-road drive modes. The three available modes, Firm, Moderate, and Soft, have all been enhanced to provide even greater comfort. Testers have praised the surprisingly good performance of the Firm mode, while the Soft mode transforms the Rivian into a smooth and comfortable ride akin to a magic carpet. Additionally, the update further enhances the Soft Sand mode, which was developed during the Rebelle Rally and helped Rivian secure victory in 2023. This means improved maneuverability in sandy terrains and when navigating dunes.
One interesting addition introduced in this software version is only mentioned in the Canadian release notes. According to these notes, Rivian EVs can now drive at speeds of up to 10 kph (6 mph) with the lights turned off or in parking mode. This feature is particularly useful for camping, as it allows users to drive into campsites at night without disturbing fellow campers. While it may seem like a minor improvement, it was necessary for Rivian to implement this feature in order to comply with the requirements of Transport Canada officials, who had temporarily halted deliveries in Canada.
In addition to the vehicle update, Rivian has also revamped its mobile app. The latest version, 2.6.0, introduces widgets and a new health center. Furthermore, if you own multiple Rivian EVs, you can now switch between vehicles by long-pressing the widget. The Rivian Health Center provides users with essential information about their vehicles, including software updates, maintenance reminders, tire pressure monitoring, and Gear Guard status.
In a recent update from Rivian, the latest version of their application showcases mentions of NACS, along with a clever animation that demonstrates the utilization of an NACS to CCS adapter. The visuals depict an adapter that bears resemblance to the one recently announced by Ford. Furthermore, the application divulges that this particular adapter is exclusively compatible with NACS fast chargers, rendering it incompatible with AC chargers. Consequently, the use of this adapter at Tesla destination chargers is effectively ruled out. Additionally, the app contains references to Plug-n-Charge for Tesla Supercharger via the Rivian mobile app, mirroring Ford’s implementation of the Tesla API.
Within our most recent software update, we have implemented a series of enhancements:
⚡ Enhanced functionality of the Soft Sand mode, which was developed and refined during our triumphant participation in the Rebelle Rally
⚡ Introduction of a new ride feel setting specifically designed for on-road drive modes
⚡ Streamlined control shortcuts that allow for quick and convenient access to features such as Pet Comfort and Car Wash mode
