At the Genesis Invitational, Rory McIlroy discussed the future of international golf and proposed his vision for the sport once the competition between circuits concludes. He suggested the creation of a Champions League-style tournament, inspired by football, which would unite the world’s top 80 players from different circuits.
Ever since LIV Golf burst onto the scene, causing chaos in the established golf hierarchy, Rory McIlroy has been outspoken about this issue. He has expressed strong views against LIV and its players, but recently he has slightly changed his stance, particularly after Jon Rahm’s departure to Greg Norman’s circuit. The Northern Irishman has recently stated his intention to focus more on his own game and be less vocal about the issue. However, he is frequently asked about it and often provides insightful comments. And his natural inclination to speak out quickly resurfaces…
During the Genesis Invitational, Rory responded to a question from an American journalist about the future of golf. What he had to say could potentially inspire decision-makers, although his voice may not hold much weight when the highly debated merger between the PGA Tour, LIV, and possibly the DP World Tour takes place and the heads of these organizations sit down together (hopefully soon) to discuss.
“We could take inspiration from the Champions League and create a circuit that brings together the top 80 players in the world…” Although Rory is no longer the head of the player council at the PGA Tour, his opinion still carries significance.
“We should attempt to establish a circuit exclusively for the top 80 players in the world. I believe everything is leading towards a decision regarding this format. In my opinion, it could resemble something similar to the Champions League in football. The best players from other circuits would contribute to this league through a qualification system. Ideally, like in football, there would be a flagship circuit that annually brings together the strongest players from each ‘secondary’ circuit.” This league could potentially have tournaments primarily based in the United States, but not limited to it, as mentioned by McIlroy.
“The United States represents the largest golf market globally, and that must be taken into consideration. Additionally, there are iconic courses here that host significant events (such as Pebble Beach, Bay Hill, Riviera, Muirfield Village…), and some of them are crucial in my opinion. However, there is no reason why we couldn’t gather the best players for a tournament in other parts of the world. I believe it would benefit the entire golf market, sponsors, and the media…” Rory mentions various locations in his response, including the Emirates, South Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe, and a majority of events in the United States, including the majors, totaling just over 20 tournaments.
Is Rory’s proposal too idealistic? Is it realistic? Even he has doubts. “I’ve said it before, everyone has their own interests in this sport, and that’s even more true when the overall golf landscape is quite fragmented. Aligning everyone’s interests and convincing all stakeholders that this is the right thing to do for the sport as a whole won’t be easy. But for now, it’s simply about getting everyone on the same page.” And that’s already a challenge…
