In a stunning turn of events, the New York Mets are in desperate need of a designated hitter (DH) for the upcoming season. With free agency in full swing, there are a plethora of veteran options available for the team to consider. But the burning question on everyone’s mind is: when will the Mets finally pull the trigger and make a move?
The Mets have long been known for their lackluster offense, and the addition of a powerful DH could be just what they need to turn their fortunes around. With the likes of Nelson Cruz and Marcell Ozuna on the market, there is no shortage of talent available to fill this crucial role. But will the Mets be willing to open their checkbook and sign one of these proven sluggers?
Rumors have been swirling around the Mets’ front office, with insiders suggesting that they are indeed interested in adding a DH to their lineup. However, the team’s financial situation may prove to be a stumbling block. After a tumultuous year filled with financial uncertainty, it remains to be seen if the Mets are willing to make a significant investment in a DH.
Fans are eagerly awaiting news of any potential signings, but the Mets have remained tight-lipped about their plans. Will they surprise everyone and make a splash in the free agency market? Or will they once again disappoint their loyal fanbase? Only time will tell.
As the offseason progresses, all eyes will be on the Mets and their pursuit of a DH. With the team aiming to contend for a playoff spot, the addition of a powerful bat could be the missing piece of the puzzle. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as the Mets navigate the treacherous waters of free agency.
In his first winter as president of baseball operations for the New York Mets, David Stearns has been busy making moves to shape the team’s 2024 roster. One area that still needs attention is the designated hitter position.
According to a report from The Athletic’s Will Sammon, the Mets’ front office is keeping an eye on this position. Two free-agent sluggers, J.D. Martinez and Jorge Soler, are available and could potentially provide an immediate boost to New York’s offense. However, their asking prices will need to drop significantly for the Mets to pursue them aggressively. In the meantime, it is expected that a combination of Mark Vientos, Starling Marte, and DJ Stewart will handle the majority of DH at-bats during the 2024 season.
The designated hitter spot has been a concern for the Mets since the Universal DH rule was implemented in 2022. The hitters who have filled this position have struggled, producing a .682 OPS, which ranks among the worst in baseball, according to FanGraphs.
There has been pressure on the Mets to take advantage of the slow-moving free-agent market. Some have argued that signing Martinez or Soler would provide much-needed protection for Pete Alonso in the lineup. Despite these calls, it remains to be seen if the Mets will make a move.
MLB Trade Rumors predicted that Martinez could sign a two-year, $40 million deal, while Soler could land a three-year, $45 million contract. However, based on the Mets’ offseason moves, it is likely they would only be interested in a one-year commitment.
In 2023, Daniel Vogelbach saw the most at-bats as the Mets’ designated hitter. He posted a .233/.339/.404 slash line with 13 home runs and 48 RBI in 319 plate appearances.
Looking ahead to 2024, FanGraphs’ ZiPS projections provide some insight into what can be expected from Vientos, Marte, and Stewart. Additionally, Stearns has expressed a desire to give young players opportunities to establish themselves rather than acquiring a veteran.
Ultimately, the market will dictate the Mets’ actions. This could be a prime opportunity for Vientos to showcase his skills, especially with Marte slated to start in right field and additional at-bats available for players like Brett Baty and Vientos.
As of now, ZiPS projects a .728 OPS for Vientos in 2024, which would be a significant improvement from his career average of .610 OPS and would provide a much-needed boost to the Mets’ lineup.
