Patrick Mahomes celebrates his third Super Bowl victory, while Mitchell Trubisky, a former highly-drafted quarterback, is in search of his fourth team.
The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Monday that they are parting ways with Trubisky, bringing an end to the Mitch Trubisky Experiment. At the age of 29, Trubisky enters free agency with significantly diminished value.
After emerging from a backup role in Buffalo two seasons ago, Trubisky entered the 2022 free agent quarterback market with promising potential. However, his time in Pittsburgh tarnished his reputation as he solidified his status as a disappointment. It is worth noting that being chosen ahead of the emerging NFL GOAT in the draft comes with its consequences.
Throughout his tenure in Pittsburgh, Trubisky played second fiddle to Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph. The veteran quarterback started seven games for the Steelers, completing 63.8% of his passes but also throwing eight interceptions and ten touchdowns.
The Steelers had hoped that Trubisky would be a capable starter and aid in Pickett’s transition to the NFL. However, they eventually realized that neither option was viable. As a result, they enter the offseason with the intention of revitalizing the quarterback position after two consecutive seasons of offensive struggles.
Meanwhile, Chicago Bears fans still lament the decision to draft Trubisky with the second overall pick in 2017, especially considering that Patrick Mahomes was selected shortly after.
While one player alone cannot completely transform a franchise, Mahomes, at the young age of 28, has already proven himself to be a once-in-a-generation talent. The missed opportunity to acquire him is a regret that Bears fans continue to feel.
