The Washington Commanders recently underwent a transformation when they appointed the former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals as their offensive coordinator. Consequently, they had to dismiss their previous OC after just one season with the team. In the midst of this, a well-known ESPN personality used the racism card to undermine Kingsbury’s accomplishments.
During a recent episode of the ESPN show First Take, Stephen A. Smith, along with other panelists, engaged in a discussion about the Commanders’ decision to hire Kliff Kingsbury. Throughout the segment, Smith expressed strong criticism while diminishing Kingsbury’s credibility.
Furthermore, Smith continued to scrutinize the Commanders’ choice of hiring Kingsbury. He asserted that there are no legitimate football-related reasons for the Washington-based football team to bring on board the former NFL head coach, suggesting that his connections were the sole reason for his appointment.
Smith argued that Kingsbury had not achieved success in college football and had failed in his previous head coaching role with the Arizona Cardinals. Despite this, he still managed to secure another opportunity solely based on his personal connections.
Many people believe that Washington only hired Kingsbury due to his association with the USC Trojans QB, who is expected to be the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Kingsbury had worked with Williams at USC during the previous season. The Commanders currently hold the second pick in the draft and may potentially move up in the draft order.
After heavily criticizing the Commanders’ new offensive coordinator, Kliff Kingsbury, ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith embarked on a lengthy tirade about the lack of equal opportunities for Black coaches compared to their White counterparts.
Despite the controversy surrounding the hiring of Kliff Kingsbury, the Commanders have successfully assembled a new coaching staff. They are now focused on selecting a new quarterback in the upcoming draft in order to revitalize their franchise.
