Promoter Eddie Hearn has added IBF light welterweight champion Subriel Matias to his stable at Matchroom Boxing, securing the services of the most avoided and arguably the top fighter in the 140-pound division.
With Matias boasting a perfect knockout record, his fights will now be available for streaming on DAZN, providing the platform with an exceptional fighter to attract subscribers.
Surprisingly, Top Rank did not sign Matias to face their own fighter, WBO 140-pound champion Teofimo Lopez. It is possible that they did not want to risk their star Teo losing to the lesser-known Puerto Rican knockout artist and wasting their investment in the New Yorker’s career.
The addition of the formidable Matias (20-1, 20 KOs) to Hearn’s stable now includes the following fighters from the 140-pound division:
– Richardson Hitchins
– Liam Paro
– Jack Catterall
– Regis Prograis
A Powerhouse Puncher Joins the Streaming Platform
Matias now stands as the prized gem in Hearn’s stable at 140 pounds, offering a potential opponent for WBC 140-pound champion Devin Haney in a unification bout if Haney successfully overcomes Ryan Garcia on April 20th.
Some boxing enthusiasts believe that Matias is the one fighter at light welterweight whom Haney and his father, Bill, want to avoid due to his devastating power and relentless pursuit of his opponents.
Matias is a far more captivating fighter to watch compared to Haney, possessing a rugged style that perfectly suits the intensity of trench warfare. He is the real deal, not a replica of Mayweather, who often puts fans to sleep.
In his last fight, Matias showcased his skills by relentlessly pressuring and ultimately stopping the previously unbeaten Shohjahon Ergashev (23-1, 20 KOs) in the sixth round to claim the vacant IBF light welterweight title last November at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.
Immediate Title Defense on the Horizon
Matias’s first fight under his new Matchroom promoters will be against the undefeated Liam Paro (24-0, 15 KOs), ranked at #7, in June or July in Puerto Rico. This matchup promises to be an intriguing spectacle on DAZN.
Paro, a southpaw, has impressed in his last two fights, securing stoppage victories over Montana Love and Brock Jarvis. It remains to be seen how Paro will handle Matias’s relentless assault in this bout. Should Paro emerge victorious, Hearn will likely look to arrange a unification fight against Haney.
The signing of Subriel Matias is a major coup for the team. Welcome to Matchroom Boxing, Subriel Matias, a truly formidable fighter!
