Terence Crawford is on the lookout for new opponents after being rejected by Canelo Alvarez and Errol Spence Jr. for his next bout. Canelo has expressed disinterest in facing Crawford, while Spence, the former IBF, WBA & WBC welterweight champion, is currently recovering from eye surgery.
There is speculation that Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) may wait for the outcome of the March 30th fight between Tim Tszyu and Keith Thurman before pursuing a match with the WBO junior middleweight champion.
Boxing analyst Rick Glaser believes that if Tszyu (24-0, 17 KOs) emerges victorious in his clash against veteran Thurman on Amazon Prime PPV, Crawford could set his sights on him. Glaser suggests that Crawford would only need to wait a month to determine the fight’s outcome before initiating negotiations with Tszyu.
According to Glaser, the WBO’s regulations would make Crawford the mandatory #1 contender in the 154-pound division if he desires to face Tszyu. This would essentially compel Tszyu to accept the fight, which would generate significant global interest.
While Tszyu may not earn as much money fighting Crawford as he would against other 154-pound contenders or unified champion Jermell Charlo, a matchup with Crawford is one that he would willingly accept.
A showdown between Crawford and WBO 154-pound champion Tszyu would be a colossal blockbuster event in the boxing world, resulting in substantial financial gains for both fighters. For Crawford, it would present an opportunity to secure a fourth-division world title and demonstrate his ability to defeat a top-level fighter in his prime, rather than one who is physically depleted and weight-drained.
Considering Tszyu’s current status as the top contender in the 154-pound division, a victory over him would undoubtedly be the most significant accomplishment of Crawford’s career.
