Before Ford updated the 2024 F-150 Raptor R and finally gave its supercharged V8 engine around 720 horsepower, the most powerful full-size light-duty pickup truck with an internal combustion engine was the Ram 1500 TRX. This model will be retired after the 2024 model year, so let’s appreciate it while it’s still around.
Currently, there is a lot of attention on the 2024 Tesla Cybertruck, the futuristic stainless steel pickup truck that Elon Musk promised years ago and started delivering at the end of last year. People might remember the launch event, which included a race between a Porsche 911 and a Tesla Cybertruck towing another 911 on a trailer. The results of this race were heavily debated.
Now, I must be honest – I believe the same fate awaits the results of this race. However, let’s go ahead and discuss it. Hennessey, after announcing their pursuit of the world’s fastest car top speed record with the Venom F5, returned to the Pennzoil Proving Ground with a modified Ram 1500 TRX called the Mammoth 1000.
The Mammoth 1000 is equipped with a high-flow 2.65L supercharger, fuel injectors, high-flow induction system, and performance-boosting calibration, resulting in a monstrous pickup truck with 1,012 horsepower and 969 lb-ft of torque. This setup is expected to give the Tesla Cybertruck a run for its money in a classic battle between internal combustion engines and electric vehicles. Three races took place from a standstill at the company’s quarter-mile track, and the Mammoth 1000 won all of them convincingly.
However, there are a few factors to consider that cast doubt on the validity of this encounter. Firstly, the Tesla Cybertruck used in the race was not the high-performance Cyberbeast version with 845 horsepower, but the Foundation Series Cybertruck AWD, which has a lower price and 600 electric horsepower. Secondly, the TRX used in the race was not the standard 702-horsepower version, but a modified version with over 1,000 horsepower.
Thirdly, Hennessey did not provide any official times for the races, making it impossible to determine if the Tesla was driven at its maximum potential throughout the race. Nevertheless, as the door is now open for Cybertruck versus TRX races, we can expect more encounters in the future – and hopefully, the 720-horsepower 2024 Raptor R will join the competition soon.
