The cars in the top ten were the usual suspects in this industry, such as the Mercedes-Benz Gullwing, Bugatti Chiron, a Porsche Carrera GT, and, not to mention, a 1997 Lamborghini Diablo once owned by Donald Trump.
The auction was filled with custom rides as well, and they also have their own stars. For example, the imposing six-wheeled Humvee made by Danton Arts Kustoms, fetched a staggering $825,000, which is not far from the $1.1 million paid for Trump’s Lambo.
Moving on to something significantly less expensive, but equally impressive, we have the 1956 Ford Thunderbird. We previously discussed this car in detail back in January and promised to revisit it if it made a splash during the sale. And guess what?
This project is based on a first-generation model, but has been given a new lease on life and a unique appearance by a California-based crew known as RMD Garage. It immediately catches the eye with its roofless design and the addition of two individual steel cowls behind each seat.
Despite its modifications, the Thunderbird still maintains the overall shape of the original model, which is enhanced by the Galaxy Gray Pearl paint that covers its exterior. The custom Schott wheels (19-inch front and 20-inch rear) wrapped in Toyo tires add a modern and personalized touch. The gray exterior is perfectly complemented by a Scarlet Red interior.
Under the hood, the Thunderbird has undergone significant changes. It now sits on a custom chassis with 4-link adjustable coilover suspension and a Ford 9-inch rear-end. Powering the car is a second-generation Coyote engine, delivering an impressive 650 horsepower. This power is harnessed through a six-speed transmission and controlled by a Wilwood braking system.
All of these features convinced a buyer to spend a substantial amount of money on the Thunderbird during the auction. When the final bid was placed, the lucky winner acquired this custom vehicle for the price of $385,000.
To put this into perspective, consider that Fisker is asking the same amount for their Ronin Super GT. This electric sports car boasts an astounding 1,000 horsepower from its all-electric setup.
Perhaps that’s not the best comparison, as the Ronin Super GT is not within everyone’s budget. How about this: for $385,000, you could purchase 11 Dodge Chargers in the SXT trim.
