Take-Two, the company that owns Rockstar, recently released its latest sales figures, which were both expected and surprising. The previous update on the success of Grand Theft Auto V came a few months ago when it reached 185 million copies sold. However, as of December 2023, the game managed to sell an additional 10 million units, surpassing expectations once again.
The release of the Grand Theft Auto VI trailer on December 5 contributed to the game’s hype. The 1-minute 30-second video set a new record on YouTube, receiving 93 million views within the first 24 hours, the most for a non-music launch. Currently, the trailer has accumulated 174,230,787 views, making it the second most-watched video game trailer. The first place is currently held by Subway Surfers, with 361,548,700 views since September 2012. It will be interesting to see where GTA 6 stands in another 12 years.
For those unfamiliar with the gaming industry, selling 10 million copies in just a few months, after being on the market for 10 years, is unimaginable. Only a select few games can achieve this feat so late in their lifecycle, such as Minecraft (2011) with over 300 million copies sold and the Tetris franchise with over 520 million copies sold. However, the latter can be discounted due to its numerous versions.
It’s worth noting that most other AAA titles can only dream of reaching 10 million units sold throughout their lifetime, let alone nearly 20 times that. Additionally, the report reveals that the entire GTA franchise has sold over 420 million units, solidifying its status as a successful, iconic, and critically acclaimed brand.
According to Take-Two, GTA V has been the top-selling game in the United States for the past decade in terms of both unit and dollar sales. Red Dead Redemption 2 has also performed well, selling over 61 million units, while the entire Red Dead Redemption franchise has reached a total of 86 million units sold. Following the same criteria as GTA V, this franchise has been the second best-selling title in the US over the past 6 years.
Interestingly, the report even acknowledges Midnight Club Los Angeles for pioneering the open-city street racing genre. Even Max Payne 3, often overlooked, is recognized as “Rockstar Games’ most technologically advanced and cinematic action-shooter to date.”
This report provides numerous unique insights. If you’re a gaming industry enthusiast, don’t miss the opportunity to delve into every page.
