Remco, a Belgian cyclist, recently imitated the phone call celebration of an American tennis player after winning the 2024 Figueira Champions Classic. This celebration had become a trademark for Ben Shelton, who used it after defeating his opponent in the quarterfinals of the 2023 US Open.
Remco participated in the second edition of the Figueira Champions Classic, representing the Soudal-QuickStep UCI World Team. He emerged victorious in the one-day cycling race, completing a 52km course. His total time was four hours, 42 minutes, and 25 seconds, with a lead of one minute and 48 seconds over the second-place finisher.
After crossing the finish line, Remco delighted the fans by mimicking Ben Shelton’s dialed-in celebration, which originated in tennis but has now made its way into other sports.
In September of the previous year, Shelton explained that his dialed-in celebration was a tribute to one of his close friends, an Olympian and three-time world champion. They became friends while attending the University of Florida.
Unfortunately, Shelton suffered a humiliating defeat against Tommy Paul, the 12th-ranked player in the world, in the semifinals of the Dallas Open. Paul went on to win the tournament, claiming his second ATP Tour title.
Prior to their semifinal match, Paul and Shelton had faced each other four times, with two wins each. While Paul emerged victorious in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Australian Open, Shelton had defeated him in the US Open and Tokyo.
Tommy Paul ultimately triumphed over his fellow American in the final, securing the Dallas Open title.
