In the movie, there are multiple scenes featuring a distinct Range Rover that James Bond utilizes for his endeavors (watch the video below for a glimpse of these scenes). This particular Range Rover stands out due to its unconventional design – it lacks a roof, features two benches facing each other at the back, and possesses the unlikely appearance of an SUV that is simultaneously a three-door convertible.
The creation of this James Bond-inspired Range Rover served as the inspiration for the build we have here. Built on the same 1983 short wheelbase platform as the one in the movie, this version also lacks a roof and only has two doors. However, it presents itself as the ultimate sleeper, combining the classic British off-roader aesthetic with the power and modern-day features.
This remarkable project was undertaken by Lunaz, a prominent British company known for their expertise in EV conversions. Although it was specifically commissioned by a confidential client, it is likely that Lunaz will use this as a foundation for future extraordinary electromods.
At first glance, the SUV appears unassuming, and the one-of-a-kind Maya Blue paint might lead one to believe that it is a classic gem intended to impress at various exhibitions. However, the exterior is the only aspect that retains a classic appearance.
The most noticeable alteration is the removal of the roof, which has been replaced with a blue mohair convertible top. To accommodate this significant change, Lunaz reinforced the body and chassis, and also installed new suspension and braking systems. Despite these modifications, the Range Rover retains all of its original capabilities, including its ability to wade through water (up to 500 mm) and its approach, breakover, and departure angles.
While the exterior of the SUV remains untouched, the interior is entirely customized. In fact, Lunaz reveals that out of the 5,000 hours dedicated to the vehicle’s construction, 1,000 were solely devoted to the interior. This makes it the most extensive interior development in any car converted by Lunaz, and it is now unrecognizable compared to the original.
Every detail was carefully considered, and all the installed features are designed to bring the old Range Rover into the modern era. The dashboard and center console underwent the most significant changes, as they needed to be replaced to accommodate an infotainment system. This technology supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and also displays images from the reversing camera. Additionally, it includes digital controls for the air conditioning and heating system.
The composite center console, which took two years to build from scratch, was created in-house by Lunaz. It is 3D printed and finished in Mocca Walnut wood. This distinctive feature will be a common sight in the future, as it will be included in all the classic vehicles that Lunaz converts.
In other places, the seats are naturally upholstered in leather, but there are also areas of waterproof and chlorine-resistant fabric. Throughout the vehicle, USB ports have been installed to assist with charging electronic devices.

Now, let’s talk about the powertrain. As many of you are aware, Range Rover used to equip their vehicles with a V8 engine in the past. However, since we’re discussing a Lunaz conversion here, that powertrain has been completely replaced with something more electrifying.
That something is an electric drivetrain manufactured by Lunaz. While the specific details of the battery are not disclosed, based on their recent products, it’s likely to be around 80 kWh and capable of recharging through regenerative braking.
The exact number of electric motors used in this conversion is unknown, but we have been informed that the replacement for the V8 engine delivers an output of 370 horsepower.
The price of the 1983 Range Rover Safari has not been made public, but considering the other offerings by Lunaz, it is highly probable to cost a few hundred thousand dollars.
This electric vehicle will not be a one-off creation. Lunaz has announced that they have 50 available slots for similar conversions. However, the timeframe for receiving the finished product after placing an order remains unclear.
