David Puig, Jeunghun Wang, and Denwit Boriboonsub have earned their spots in the 152nd Open Championship, which will be held at Royal Troon. They achieved this feat by competing in the IRS Prima Malaysia Open, the third event of the Open Qualifying Series, at The Mines Resort & Golf Club.
Puig emerged as the victor at the Asian Tour event, finishing with a total score of 261, 23 under par. He achieved this remarkable score by delivering consecutive rounds of 62 in the third and final round. Wang secured the second qualifying spot by delivering a final round of 61, finishing with 21 under par. Boriboonsub claimed the final qualifying berth due to his higher position in the world rankings compared to John Catlin, with whom he shared third place at -20.
The next event in the Open Qualifying Series is the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, which is scheduled to take place at Bay Hill from March 7th to 10th.
David Puig Currius, a Spanish professional golfer, made the decision to cut short his college career in 2022 to join LIV Golf. Born on December 7, 2001, Puig enjoyed success in junior competitions during his amateur career. He represented Spain at the Junior Golf World Cup in Japan, earning silver in 2018 and bronze in 2019. Puig also had the opportunity to represent Europe in the 2018 Junior Ryder Cup.
Notable achievements include a third-place finish at the 2021 European Amateur Championship. Puig enrolled at Arizona State University in 2019, where he played collegiate golf for the Arizona State Sun Devils men’s team. He made a significant impact, winning the 2021 Southwestern Invitational by a record nine strokes in just his fifth collegiate stroke play tournament and successfully defending his title in 2022.
Puig’s accomplishments also extend to international events. He participated in the Arnold Palmer Cup in 2020 and 2021, with an individual record of 3–1 in both events. In 2021, Puig was recognized as the Catalan Player of the Year by the Catalan Association of Golf Journalists.
In 2022, Puig played a crucial role in leading the Sun Devils to the final match at the NCAA Championship. He was also invited to compete in the inaugural tournament of the LIV Golf Invitational Series at Centurion Club. Puig turned professional in September 2022 and made his debut as a professional golfer at the LIV Golf Invitational Chicago.
Puig joined the Asian Tour and showcased his skills by holding the third-round lead at the International Series Morocco before finishing in third place. In 2023, he became a member of the Torque GC team for the LIV Golf League, alongside players such as Joaquín Niemann, Sebastián Muñoz, and Mito Pereira.
Despite being the youngest player on the roster, Puig played a significant role in Torque’s victories at team events in Orlando, Washington, Andalusia, and Greenbrier. In October 2023, he secured his first professional win at the International Series Singapore tournament on the Asian Tour, leading wire-to-wire and winning by five strokes.
