In California, Tiger Woods fell ill with symptoms resembling the flu. The 15-time Major champion decided to withdraw from the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational after completing only six holes in the second round. Following conversations with tournament officials, he was transported to the Club House in a golf cart and received treatment through intravenous fluids.
“He experienced a slight fever prior to the game, but his condition improved during warm-up. He began walking and playing, but then started feeling dizzy. He was dehydrated and did not sustain any new injuries, and his back is in good condition,” reassured Rob McNamara, Woods’ associate and vice president of Tgr Ventures.
Woods is the offspring of Kultida Woods, a native of Thailand, and Earl Woods, a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army. Woods has two half-brothers and a half-sister from Earl Woods’ 18-year marriage to Barbara Woods Gary. He was born in Cypress, California, and grew up further north along the West Coast of the United States in the Los Angeles area.
His father bestowed upon him the moniker “Tiger” at birth, as a tribute to his friend Vuong Dang Phong, who had fought alongside him in the Vietnam War. Woods attended Western High School in Anaheim and pursued economics at Stanford University for two years before deciding to turn professional.
In 1996, he co-established the Tiger Woods Foundation with his father, which focuses on the education and support of children and youth in the United States. From October 2004 to August 2010, Tiger Woods was married to former Swedish model Elin Nordegren.
The couple has a daughter (born in 2007) and a son (born in 2009). Since their divorce on August 23, 2010, custody of the children has been shared between both parents. In mid-March 2013, Woods announced on his Facebook account that he was in a relationship with alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn.
On May 3, 2015, Vonn revealed on her Facebook page that she and Woods had ended their relationship. Woods has ancestral roots in African American, Native American, Chinese, Thai, and Dutch heritage. He is credited with increasing interest in golf among non-white Americans. Tiger Woods practices Buddhism.
