(L to R): Dr Helmut Marko, Red Bull Motorsport Consultant, celebrates on the podium with Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing. 23.10.2022. Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 19, United States Grand Prix, Austin, Texas, USA, Race Day
Max Verstappen expressed his unwavering support for Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko, amidst rumors that this could be Marko’s last race with the Milton Keynes team.
During the qualifying session for the Saudi Arabian GP, reports surfaced that Marko is currently under investigation by Red Bull for leaking information to the media. These leaks have emerged following the previous investigation into allegations against Team Principal Christian Horner.
The outcome of the investigation into Marko is still unknown, as the proceedings are ongoing. However, if found guilty, he could face disciplinary action. This development comes just 24 hours after the suspension of the female complainant against Horner.
When asked about the potential departure of Marko shortly after securing pole position in Jeddah, Verstappen expressed his strong support for the Austrian.
“I’m Max, and I apologize for asking this question right after qualifying and pole position, but Helmut Marco mentioned that this could be his last race. What would this mean for you, and would it have any impact on your future?”
Verstappen replied, “I have immense respect for Helmut [Marko] and what we have accomplished together. Our relationship goes way back. I have always made it clear to everyone within the team, especially the higher-ups, that he plays a crucial role in my decision-making process, not just now, but also in the future.
“It is of utmost importance that he remains a part of the team, along with everyone else, as it is a collective effort. Keeping the key individuals together is vital because, as I have expressed to the team, if such a significant pillar were to be removed, it would not bode well for my situation either.”
“Helmuth must definitely remain. He has constructed this team alongside Dietrich [Mateschitz] from the very beginning and he has always shown great loyalty to the team.
“It is also crucial to acknowledge and respect the accomplishments of this man.
“This also ties into the values of loyalty and integrity.
“It is certainly important that he continues to be a part of the team, especially for me.”
The latest development in the ongoing Red Bull saga adds more controversy, as Verstappen’s father, Jos, expressed concerns about Horner’s continued presence at Red Bull, stating that it is detrimental to the team.
This, combined with reports of Jos Verstappen meeting with Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff, has sparked speculation that the Verstappen camp is uneasy about the overall situation at Red Bull.
Now, with Marko’s position potentially being in jeopardy, and Max Verstappen’s support, the once harmonious Red Bull squad finds itself in a messy situation.
Marko hinted in an interview with Austrian Broadcaster ORF that he may no longer be present at Grands Prix as part of the Red Bull setup, casting doubt on his attendance at Round 3 in Australia.
“To put it simply, it is difficult to make a judgment, or let’s say, ultimately, I will make my own decision,” he stated.
“I believe this is a complex matter. Once again, we desire peace within the team. With 24 races, this world championship will already be challenging enough, and our focus should be on that.”
