Holger Rune received a negative response from the Montpellier crowd shortly after withdrawing from the match against Borna Coric due to an injury. Rune, who was seeded as the number one player, was competing against the fourth-seeded Coric in the semifinals of the Montpellier tournament when he began to experience discomfort in his right forearm. After visibly struggling on the court, particularly with his serves, Rune made the decision to retire from the match with Coric leading 6-3 4-1.
As the announcer announced Rune’s retirement, the crowd expressed their dissatisfaction by booing the 20-year-old Danish player. The booing continued as Rune made his way to his chair to gather his belongings and prepare to leave the court.
Borna Coric advances to the Montpellier final after Rune’s retirement with a score of 6-3 4-1.
Prior to Rune’s forearm pain becoming significant, he initially gained an advantage by breaking Coric’s serve in the third game of the match. However, Rune’s lead was short-lived as Coric quickly regained the break in the fourth game.
After reclaiming the break, Coric had an opportunity to secure another break in the sixth game. However, Rune managed to save three consecutive break points, resulting in a six-game tie in the first set. Nevertheless, Coric continued to put pressure on Rune’s serve, earning new break points in the eighth game and successfully converting them to take a 5-3 lead. Coric then served out the first set in the following game.
With a set advantage, Coric started the second set by breaking Rune’s serve in the opening game and held his own serve in the subsequent game to establish an early 2-0 lead. After losing five consecutive games, Rune managed to hold his serve in the third game, breaking Coric’s streak.
However, Rune’s forearm issues persisted, leading him to make the decision to end his participation in the match after being broken by Coric once again in the fifth game of the second set, resulting in a set and a double break deficit for the Dane.
