Tom Lockyer, the captain of Luton Town, has called on the nation to learn CPR in case of heart failures. Lockyer, who suffered a cardiac arrest during a match last year, recently showcased the defibrillator device that has been implanted in his body. The Welsh star displayed the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), which is designed to restart the heart through shocks instantly if another occurrence happens. Lockyer referred to it as a ‘battle wound’ and revealed that the device includes a battery that needs to be replaced every ten years.
Lockyer, who has been out of football since his cardiac arrest, spoke to a reporter from Sky Sports about his experience. He collapsed on the pitch during a Premier League match and concerns were raised about his well-being due to a previous incident in a Championship match. The EPL match was eventually abandoned. Lockyer expressed his desire to make a comeback to the club and participate in their first-ever Premier League season.
In an interview with the BBC, Lockyer discussed his immediate future and emphasized the importance of considering his family before making any decisions about returning to the sport. He collapsed on the pitch and was unresponsive for nearly three minutes. Although he has been cleared by medical experts after surgery, Lockyer is unsure about his next steps. He expressed concerns about leaving his pregnant partner to raise their child alone, prioritizing his family over his football career.
Lockyer also stressed the significance of CPR training based on his own experience. He underwent surgery to implant a defibrillator in his body to reduce the risk of future incidents. If he does make a comeback, Lockyer will join other players, including Manchester United star, who play with a defibrillator.
