Just when you think we are nearly done with the conspiratorial business, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell pulls us back in. To a large portion of Americans immersed in the NFL’s sphere, Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are the NFL’s equivalent of a power couple, existing solely to carry out the NFL’s desires in the cultural realm.
Football fans have been concocting a variety of outlandish NFL Illuminati theories about the Kelce-Swift relationship since her very first appearance at a Kansas City Chiefs home game against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 24. Of course, no conspiracy can thrive without the involvement of higher-ranking individuals.
Most people had set aside their Pepe Silvia mindset until just before kickoff on Sunday when Goodell and Taylor Swift began conversing in a luxury box. While it’s entertaining to imagine the NFL operating as a KGB-esque cultural agency with that level of influence, it’s highly unlikely unless Goodell has been pretending to be socially awkward.
However, I’m currently engrossed in Rob Reiner and Soledad O’Brien’s podcast about the JFK assassination, which has put me in a certain mindset, so let’s just play along. The last time The Commissioner had a prominent appearance with a Super Bowl non-player character was when he was seated next to Russell Wilson during consecutive Super Bowls. A few months later, Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos. Very intriguing, indeed. Wilson’s inability to perform up to par sets the stage for the Year in Swift and Kelce.
I can’t claim to know if The Commissioner and Taylor were simply engaging in casual small talk or if he was there to finalize the next phase of their plan. However, if one were to delve into the deepest recesses of their minds, this is what they might have been discussing, maybe, but probably not.
Their efforts to prolong her relationship with Travis have encountered a setback. The season is almost over, and with Taylor on a break from the international leg of her tour, negotiating face-to-face in public was the best opportunity for Goodell to utilize his charm.
Persuading Taylor that it’s in her best interest to prevent Travis Kelce from retiring. Kelce apparently delivered a speech on Saturday that moved his teammates to tears. The Commissioner likely heard about it before the rest of us and is going to great lengths to prevent Travis from disrupting their plans for next season.
Offering her the Super Bowl 59 Halftime Show. Swift announced that she has an album coming out this year, so what better time to solidify her relationship with the NFL on its grandest stage.
Taylor Swift exerted pressure on The Commissioner by giving him an ultimatum to increase the NFL’s compensation package and exorbitant appearance fees after her exceptional performance this season.
Goodell attempts to take a picture with Taylor to show his twin daughters while she apologizes, but reminds her that the no-camera phones policy applies to him as well.
Taylor informs The Commissioner that the deal is off and confesses that she has actually fallen for Travis’ unique charm.
