I’m sure most of you are familiar with the film Smokey and the Bandit, featuring Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, Jerry Reed, and Jackie Gleason. The story revolves around a man named Bo “Bandit” Darville who sets out on a mission to illegally transport a shipment of Coors beer from Texas to Georgia in record time.
In the movie, the Bandit’s iconic black Pontiac Trans Am becomes more than just a vehicle. It represents freedom, rebellion, and a discerning taste in cars. Pontiac provided four 1977 Trans Am cars for the production, although technically they were 1976-model year vehicles with 1977 front ends, and the decals were changed to 1977-style designs.
Now, let me introduce you to the limited series Bandit Edition Chevrolet Silverado 1500. This particular model is a Crew Cab Custom with Bandit-inspired graphics and aftermarket black and gold 24-inch wheels. It is currently available for auction, with only 2,400 miles on its turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
Apart from the Bandit and Outlaw graphics on the hood, body, and tailgate, this Silverado also comes equipped with additional features such as an aftermarket hood scoop, receiver hitch, tonneau cover, and 35 x 12.5-inch Haida tires to complement the stunning 24-inch wheels.
Moving on to the interior, notable highlights include black cloth seats with Bandit branding on the headrests, a power-adjustable driver seat, trailer brake controller, power windows, locks, and mirrors, woodgrain trim, cruise control, air conditioning, all-weather floor mats, and a touchscreen infotainment system with Wi-Fi connectivity, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay.
Now, let’s talk about the engine. While it may not be particularly impressive, it certainly holds its own. The Silverado is equipped with a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering 310 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
When it comes to acceleration, this truck can go from zero to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds, which is a full second faster than Chevy’s previous naturally aspirated 4.3-liter V6 variant. General Motors designed the 2.7L turbo specifically for trucks, resulting in ample low-end torque.
Of course, the Chevy Silverado lineup now offers a variety of engine options, but only the 3.0L Duramax turbodiesel and the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 surpass the pulling power of the 2.7L turbo, producing 460 lb-ft of torque.
It will be interesting to see the final bid for this Bandit-themed Silverado. In April of last year, a similar truck with fewer miles sold for $77,000 at an auction. While I don’t anticipate this particular Silverado reaching that price, it is still expected to fetch a significant amount.
